Lies Told About The Sabbath Day – By Aubrey Duncan

Amen, amen! Good evening brother Jones, so wonderful to hear your voice. You gave me quite a bit of accolades there this evening but the main one you didn’t give me was I’m just a sinner saved by grace because that’s what I am you know, just a sinner saved by grace but I thank you very much for having me here in the line this evening and I would ask that everyone in the hearing of my voice that you would keep me in a special prayer tonight because the devil is busy and he is really seeking to separate me from HIm so from the Lord. Just keep me in prayer tonight and by God’s grace I will try to share a word from the Lord. As we continue our discussion as we look about lies the Sabbath and how to confront those lies, objections if you wanna call them about the Sabbath. You know despite all the evidence that is in the bible, and that we have been presenting, there are still many who are professing or claiming to be followers of Jesus Christ that slightly reject for whatever reason God’s Sabbath truth. Tonight what I’m going to do is look at those objections that put forth and point out the error in them and point them to the truth that is in Jesus. You know for a lot of folks, it is that supposedly studied their bible it’s like what Timothy said in Timothy second 3 and 7 that they are ever learning, that they are never coming to a knowledge of the truth, the teaching of Heresy promoting the abolition of God’s Holy Law including His Sabbath is either born out of a willing ignorance or of a selfish desire. Jesus says, “if you love Me, you will obey my commandments.” And those commandments include His Sabbath commandment. Rejection of the clear visions of the prophets and of Jesus and all the historical evidence that deals with the matter of the Sabbath but this is what Peter writes in the second epistle of Peter in chapter 3 and verse 16 as also in all his epistles speaking to them with these things in which are something hard to be understood. Others are unlearn and unstable rest as they do also the other scriptures onto to their own destruction. Let us look at those some errors that men have reported and have taught and continue to teach and hold onto with regards God’s Sabbath. One of the main objections is not really seven literal days but rather 7,000 years therefore God could not be talking about a literal 7th day rest in the Sabbath commandment and I mean for one to say that and a lot do, is a real insult to God and disrespect for His Holy Word. They used a passage of scripture that are from that 2 Peter I mentioned earlier that they even used the scriptures to support their falsity there. And in second Peter chapter 3 and in verse 8 this what the bible teaches, Peter writes, “But beloved, Be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day as with the Lord is a thousand years and a thousand years as one day.” And they look at that and they say “wow you see that’s what the scripture says that a day is equal to a thousand years” and I say “Hold a minute, let us examine the scriptures and see really what Peter is talking about.” First of all, the scripture is in no way equating one day with a year. Peter’s statement of declaration was not a statement of comparison but rather one of contrast and what he is saying is simply contrasting our way of thinking with that of God’s, he is echoing what prophet Isaiah stated earlier in the book of Isaiah when God says “My thoughts are not your thoughts neither are your ways are My ways” said the Lord “for as the heavens are higher than the Earth so are My thoughts are higher than your thoughts” and that’s coming from Isaiah 55 eight and nine. Secondly, the subject of Peter’s discourse was not about creation or how long it took for creation instead Peter is attempting to alleviate the doubts and fears of those who were questioning and rather plainly reveal God’s bible truth and that is the visible literal second coming of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and Peter was addressing the problem of scoffers saying that you know you’ve been saying that a for a long time you have been saying that since He left that He is going to be coming back when is this coming? And Peter simply was sharing with them that God is coming on our time but He is coming in His time and that He wishes that no man should suffer, should perished that all should have an everlasting life and that is the only reason that He is delaying His coming. He was simply contrasting God’s way of thinking to ours to justify their erroneous position that a thousand years is equal to a day theory and this context also deny the literal second coming of Jesus of course they have to, and that is what happens with error. Error after error, lies after lies. The careful examination of what Peter is saying, would reveal that Peter rather equating a day to a thousand years of creation is confirming the biblical doctrine of the visible literal second coming of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and God’s love and patience in giving men an opportunity to come to know them. If anything they should start is to serve rather than to deny but to confirm the 7th day Sabbath rather than deny it, so we see the error in that. We go to the book of Genesis and we look at the days of creation, the bible is very plain and the evening and the morning was the 1st day. Moses repeated this declaration after each day it was then a 24-hour period and it is today a 24-hour period. My question is if it is a 24-hour period now and then and a day is equal to a thousand years today, when did God make the switch to the thousand years and when did He switch back so we still have 24-hour days? Follow my reasoning, it just absolutely does not make any sense and as Christians we really need to stick with God’s words. Clearly is a lie and God does not lie, this false doctrine is the sophistry of the the great deceiver and the father of lies. Brothers and sisters, the bible says that God created the heaven and the Earth and all that in them in 6 days and He rested on His Sabbath Day and today He is giving it to us as a gift from creation and that gift is still valid and still with us today. There is another passage in Psalm 19:4 and again uses that element of contrast. It says, “ For a thousand years in God’s sight are about yesterday it is past as I watched in the night. Psalms 19 and verse 4. So these are just passages of contrast that are showing us that God’s way of thinking is not ours. It’s not telling us that a 24-hour day is literally or actually a thousand years. That’s not what the scripture teaches, as a matter of fact David says Psalms 33:6-7 and 9, it says, “By the word of the Lord where the heaven is made and all the host of them by the breath of His mouth, He gathered the waters of the sea together as a heap, he lays up the deeps in storehouses for He spoke and it was done, He commanded and it stood fast.” The prophet Isaiah is in complete agreement, he writes “I have declared the form of things from the beginning and they went forth out of my mouth. I showed them, I did them, suddenly.” Not over a thousand years but suddenly. He said, “My hand also has laid the foundations of the Earth and my right hand that has found the heaven. When I call onto them, they stood up together.” One cannot reject the Sabbath claim that God took 6,000 years to create the world, it just does not add up. Now, moving right along, here is another lie that is told about God’s Sabbath. The one that Jesus rose from the dead on the first day of the week, so we honor it as the Lord’s day and made it the Sabbath Day and that’s the popular teaching out there but I think this is a classical example of the devil’s trickery and mixing truths with error and passing it off as the gospel into God’s people. It is quite unfortunate that so many of God’s profess followers are accepting this as bible truth. Jesus was in fact resurrected on the first day of the week, today called Sunday. All four of the Gospels recalled this account so I’ll just give you the account of the Gospels to show us that Jesus in fact resurrected on the first day of the week they called Sunday but what we’ll discover and what you can’t find in the scripture is that because of Jesus’ resurrection God replaced that as the Sabbath or call it and make it a holy day. We go now to the book of Luke. “And then the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James have brought sweet spices in the morning, the first day of the week. They came to the tomb at the rising of the sun and the angel said unto them, be not of frightened.” We see Jesus of Nazareth which is crucified, He has risen, He is not here behold the place where they laid, abduct Him from the book of Mark. Bible truth in this instance is craftily twisted and passed on to the rejection of God’s Sabbath by the great deceiver. He now uses it to his agents to report his false doctrine of Sunday sacredness. It cannot be found brothers and sister anywhere in scripture that because Jesus rose from the grave on the first day of the week that Sunday should be honored as a holy day or that it has been changed into God’s Sabbath. Now let me share with you where that error came from that has endowed the entire world. As we go the Catholic Catechism of Christian Doctrine and practices we would find this testimony. It has the question, “Why does the church command us to keep Sunday Holy instead of Sabbath?” The answer, the church commands us to keep Sunday Holy instead of Sabbath because on Sunday Christ rose from the dead. And on Sunday, he sent the Holy Ghost upon the disciples, party true. But truth mix with error, that’s what the devil uses. Now the church may have commanded it brothers and sisters but God never sanctioned it. Jesus never commanded nor ordained that Sunday should be kept holy in honor of His resurrection. The doctrine that was pointed out above was a teaching of the Roman Catholicism. Unfortunately, their teaching, though UN-scriptural is passionately embraced by all of Christianity. It has no basis of scripture and as Protestants those of us who are supposedly protesting the error of Rome should regard the bible as our only guide of faith and practice. I wanna give you the quotation of a church historian by the name of William Chalmers, he writes, “The gentile Christians of Rome and Alexandria began calling the first day of the week the Lord’s Day. This was not difficult for the pagans of the Roman Empire who was tipped into sun worship to accept because they are the pagans who refer to their sun-god as their lord and that’s what has come to Christianity, the mixture of paganism and bible truth and that’s where we get this errors. Our God makes it clear to his children what His special day is, He declared to Moses in Sinai that the 7th day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God. The prophet Isaiah likewise continues, if you turn away thy foot from the Sabbath, from the pleasure of my Holy Day my brothers and sisters God said that he want to call His Sabbath day a delight. The 7th day is God’s Sabbath day and He wants us to keep it to be delightful in it. There is not a shadow of a doubt what God calls His holy day, He calls it the Sabbath. Finally, to change God’s will, to change one’s will after they are dead is illegal so if God’s will is for us to keep His holy ten commandments and then men come along and then change His will then they are acting illegally. If you are to change someone’s will, you’ll probably end up in jail or end up paying a large fine. Nevertheless, this is what being promoted in the Christian World that after Jesus’ death that the new covenant came into place. Well, there is no such thing in the bible, God’s law has always been God’s law and it is unchangeable. To presume to change the will of keeping the Sunday Sabbath, claiming the first day to be holy because he rose on that day is a blatant violation of God’s will. The next lie that I’d like to address is that God’s law including the 7th, the Sabbath commandment was nailed to the cross therefore we no longer have to keep the law. I mean this is a frightening thought for God not to have a law. My brothers and sisters, There are laws in your home, there are laws in the cities in which you live, there are laws in the county in which you live, in the state in which you live, in the country in which you live, there are international laws, are you suggesting that the God of the universe does not have a law because it was nailed to the cross at the coming of Jesus Christ, at the crucifixion of Jesus Christ? Such a teaching defies basic common sense and it definitely, most definitely, cannot be established on the word of God. God’s word gives no such revelation; God’s law is the very foundation of Hid government. It’s His constitution laid down for all men in all times to obey. His law my brothers and sisters, is the expression of His will.  God’s law provides the norms and defines the parameters which He expects us, His children to live. It is ridiculous to suggest that it has been nailed to the cross. Why would Jesus pay such a price? Died in such an ignominious death on the cross of Calvary in order to rid the world of the law of God? Impossible, think about it, that’s almost, that’s not almost, that’s totally impossible. The plain answer is that He did not do such a thing. Jesus Himself declares to the contrary. He says, “Think not that I come to destroy the law or the prophets. I am not going to destroy but to fulfill. Who shall ever fail to break at least one of these commandments and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven.” But whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven.” And that comes from the book of Matthew chapter 5 verses 17 to 19. Jesus’ job brothers and sisters is to empower us to keep the law. Jesus came to do away with sin which is the breaking of the law. He did not come to do away with the law and He certainly did not do away with God’s law. My brothers and sisters, one of the scripture text that those that preach this heresy that they use to prove that the law has done away with, the at the Sabbath was done away with at the cross is found in the book of Colossians which reads, “Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us and took it out-of-the-way nailing it to the cross.” Goes on to say, “Let no man therefore judge you I meat, or drink, or in respect of the holy day, or of the new moon, or of the Sabbath days which are a shadow of things to come but the body of Christ.” And that is found in the book of Colossians chapter 2 verses 14, 16, and 17. As we examine these texts carefully there are some things that we would discover, number 1 the text referred to the handwriting of ordinances which was against us. My brother and sisters, the law is not against us and it’s not handwriting of ordinances. The law was written by the fingers of God and tables of stone which tells me that it is eternal. Secondly, Paul was admonishing the newly baptized Jews not to judge the gentiles who were coming into the church based on their adoption of the ordinances, their temple services would meat and drink and feast days that were associated with the sanctuary and its services there is no meat or drink or sacrifice associated with the seventh day Sabbath. These were tights that pointed to the life and ministry of Jesus Christ. The Sabbath is not a shadow of anything; it is a reality of itself. My brothers and sisters, Paul also was saying that those ordinances including circumcision which was the basic issue that he was discussing and the yearly ritual which was also called Sabbath were real because they were fulfilled in the life and ministry of Jesus Christ. There is no mention here of the 10 commandment law, all men at all times are subject to that law. Paul himself declares, he says, “Wherefore the law is holy and the commandments holy and righteous and good.” That’s Romans 7:12. Paul would be some kind of cosmic trickster I guess or Jesus also in order t tell us in one hand that the law is no good and it’s done away with but also to tell us on the other hand that it’s good, it’s holy, and it should be kept. My brothers and sisters, this makes absolutely no sense and we should not subscribe to that. Paul was making no reference to the 7th day Sabbath in that passage, the Sabbath has been discovered to be the very seal of God He was not talking about ordinances. Paul reiterates in first Corinthian 7 and 19. “Circumcision is nothing; un-circumcision is nothing but the keeping of the commandments of God.” And I say praise God, my brothers and sisters, the apostle Paul was a Sabbath keeper and he does not teach anywhere or write anywhere in his writings about God’s law, his Ten Commandments law which includes the Sabbath was done away with. Lie number 3, disciple seize to keep the Sabbath and kept Sunday as the Lord’s day well I’ve already quoted to you one source where that information came from but if we just casually examine the record, we would discover that the 7th day Sabbath was not nailed to the cross, it definitely was observed by disciples of the early church long after Christ’s death and resurrection. We have pointed out earlier that who it is that attempted to change God’s law and claim that honor of changing God’s law, that dishonor rather as their mark of authority. The God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ is blessed forevermore know it that I lie not when our God creates, He creates forever. No change to God’s law, He gave us His law and He never created it. My brothers and sisters if you remember in the Old Testament, the prophet Baalam was going to speak against God’s people and as he opened his mouth to speak against God’s people he actually praised God and he says, “ behold I have received commandment to bless and He God had blessed and I cannot reverse.” So again whatever God creates and blesses, anyone cannot and does not, and man cannot change. Jesus told His disciples that the Sabbath would be kept even after His death and telling them about the events that would take place at the end of the world. Now if He was done away with the Sabbath, why did he mention it to His disciples that after His death and resurrection, after the destruction of Jerusalem, that they should pray and be sure that they don’t have to flee on the Sabbath Day? You see, this again it’s a false doctrine, it’s a false teaching, it’s not based on the bible but it is based on the opinions and traditions of lord in men so called. After His crucifixion, the disciples were adamant in keeping the Sabbath. The bible records that they have come to anoint the body of Jesus Christ but because the Sabbath is on, that they decided not to anoint the body of Jesus and the scripture tells us and that day was the preparation day and the Sabbath drew it on and they return and prepared spices, ointment and rested on the 7th day according to the commandment. I say praise God. This is after the death of Jesus the record brothers and sisters firmly states that rather than changing or abandoning the Sabbath on account of Jesus’ death and burial the disciples continue to honor it on the Lord’s day. But what is this notion that the disciples have gathered together on the first day of the week to celebrate the Lord’s resurrection, well let’s go to the bible and see what the bible states. The bible states, “Then the same that evening being the first day of the week, whether the disciples were assembled for fair of the Jews came Jesus and said unto them “peace be onto you”. Only God could change His law and the fact that the disciples gathered together on Sunday first of all they were hiding from the Jews because they were afraid that what they had done to Jesus as His disciples that they would do to them so they were hiding and it was not a worship service perse’ and it was not to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It’s certainly not to make the first day of the week the Sabbath Day. My brothers and sisters we need to be careful and just go by what the word says. In Acts 20:17, the bible reads, “And upon the first day of the week the disciples came to Mary to break bread, Paul preached onto them ready to depart for tomorrow and continued his speech until midnight.” What this passage of scripture is talking about, the first day of the week, the day begins from evening, Paul was having an evening service Paul did not, Paul could not, and Paul would not do away with God’s Sabbath to institute a new day. And this is what a lot of people claimed and cite this passage and say that, “here it is we see Paul is commemorating as it were the first day of the week in honor of the resurrection of Jesus Christ as the Sabbath day.” My brothers and sisters that is not true. God never changed His law, neither His disciples, Jesus never changed it, the early Christians never changed it and my brothers and sisters, we cannot change God’s law. One of the other passages that they use is from the book of Acts 2 and 46 and it says, “And then the disciples continued daily with one accord in the temple of breaking bread from house to house they’d eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart.” Well if you gonna use that to say that God did away with the Sabbath then everyday should be a holy day because the passage in the scripture says that they gathered daily but we know that only one day is holy because the Holy God made something Holy and the day that He made holy was the 7th day Sabbath. My brothers and sisters, as I bring this to a close I barely touched on some of these lies. One of them that I did not address is a passage found in Romans 6:14 and let me get here real quickly as a lot of people claimed that we are not under grace but we under law. Let me find that here quickly. Okay, it says here, “For sin shall not have dominion over you: for you are not under the law, but under grace.” But the very next verse says, “What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? God forbid!” To say that Paul is saying that the law is done away with in verse 14 and then Paul comes back and tell us in verse 15 that we are to keep the law then does not make any sense. In order for us to understand that passage is to go in the book of Romans 3 and pick up in verse 19, it says, “For we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law that every mouth may be stopped, and the entire world may come guilty before God.” “Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.” All Paul was saying that we are all subject to the law that we have all broken the law but because of Jesus Christ who came and gives us pardon. He pardons us from the penalty of the law. And that is grace, that God pardoned us from the penalty of the law which is death. He did not pardon us for us to stop keeping the law. His grace has power for us to keep His law. And I’ve barely touched on a few of those objections, there are definitely more to it and for those of you that have interest in it, you could go to my website at www.adventruth.org, A-D-V-E-N-T-R-U-T-H. There is a lot of information there about the Sabbath and you could get a copy of my book by going to my website. The book is called God’s Sabbath Truth. My brothers and sisters, I thank you so much for tuning in tonight and for listening to what the word of God says. I pray that I have represented the Lord well  and has shared His word and that somebody has been edified tonight and hopefully someone would be drawn closer to their Lord and Savior. Thank you so much, I thank you and I thank you.
